Just one cup a day, and in a single night, protein disappears from the urine

A fresh cucumber and lemon drink can be a refreshing addition to a balanced diet, particularly for people who want to increase their fluid intake and consume more fresh produce. However, no homemade drink can make protein disappear from the urine overnight or repair damaged kidneys in a single day. Protein in the urine, known as proteinuria, can be an important sign that deserves proper medical evaluation.

To prepare a simple cucumber and lemon drink, wash one fresh cucumber thoroughly and cut it into pieces. Place it in a blender with about one cup of clean water and blend until smooth. Add the juice of half a lemon for flavor and blend briefly again. You can strain the mixture if you prefer a smoother drink, or keep the pulp to retain more of the natural fiber.

Pour the drink into a glass and enjoy it fresh. There is generally no need to add sugar. If you prefer a stronger flavor, a few fresh mint leaves can be added. This makes a light, refreshing beverage that can fit comfortably into a healthy daily routine.

Cucumber contains a high amount of water, while lemon provides vitamin C and other nutrients. Drinking a beverage like this can contribute to normal hydration, but hydration should not be confused with a treatment for kidney disease. Healthy kidneys regulate fluid balance and remove waste products from the blood through a complex process that cannot be replaced by a single food or drink.

If a urine test shows protein, the most important step is to determine the underlying reason. Temporary protein in the urine can sometimes occur after strenuous exercise, fever, dehydration, or illness. Persistent proteinuria, however, can be associated with kidney conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure, or other health problems.

For this reason, someone who repeatedly has protein detected in their urine should speak with a healthcare professional. Additional testing may include repeat urine testing, measurement of the albumin-to-creatinine ratio, blood creatinine and estimated kidney function, blood pressure measurement, and other tests depending on the individual’s situation.

It is also important not to dramatically increase water intake in an attempt to “flush” protein from the kidneys. People with advanced kidney disease, heart problems, or certain other conditions may have specific fluid requirements, so hydration should be individualized when a medical condition is present.

Supporting kidney health involves much more than one recipe. Maintaining healthy blood pressure and blood glucose, limiting excessive sodium, avoiding smoking, staying physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, and following medical advice can all be important. People with diagnosed kidney disease may also need individualized recommendations concerning protein, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and fluid intake.

A cucumber-and-lemon drink can therefore be enjoyed as a refreshing beverage, but it should not be promoted as a cure for proteinuria or kidney damage. If protein has appeared in your urine, finding and addressing the underlying cause is far more important than trying to make the urine test change overnight.

If you experience swelling around the eyes or ankles, blood in the urine, significant changes in urination, persistent nausea, severe weakness, shortness of breath, or worsening pain in the side or back, seek medical attention rather than relying on a homemade drink.
